You can also put all kinds of other stuff inside tags - like images, which will be explained further down in this journal

What is an image tag?
An image tag let's you put images (not thumbs) in your journal - like this:
the code to display an image is very simple and easy to remember:

- so the image tag code consist of the actual tag (img) which holds the image url (the place online where the image is stored).

First of all a thumb is a small preview of a larger image. On dA we use a thumbcode to input thumbs in journals, news and other stuff

You can find the thumbcode in many ways as described here: :faq66:.
You can also drag thumbs directly from your collections.
Lets have a look at how thumbs are built on dA!
When you input thumbs on dA like this: :thumb138422879: :thumb138172936: :thumb138078191: they will show up like this:

What you need to understand now is that this is not simply three images put after eachother. The first thing you migth notice is that the images have a shadow and also - they are links! So they must be wrapped in at least an -tag and a selector with a backgroundimage (the shadow). There will also have to be the actual image tag and a kind of container to hold it all.

That gives us a whole lot of possibilities.

There are a ton of different formatting tags available for you to use in your journal. Most of the tags will have a "twin" - another tag that behaves in the exact same manner, but is called something else. If you are into doing css these tags can be formatted, but we won't go into that right now.
Bold text
There are two tags to make your text bold - the and the tag.
Example of the tag:

There are two tags to make your text italic - the and the tag.

Making a journalskin - basics
So in part 3 you learned a little about css and maybe you tried that out (if you did please tell me

). If you haven't been by w3scool yet, you better go there, or at least keep it open in a seperat tab, since I won't be explaining everything here.
Step 1: Making a design
Make a simple design of what you want to do. Here's a design I made for this tutorial/walkthrough:

If you download the psd file you will see that I have sliced a couple of images out. The top gradient, the bottom gradient, the butterfly and the white border inside the textfield. I have done this already because I am experienced and know what parts I will be needing to do the design - When you try it the first time you might have to go back an reslice a couple

CSS syntax
In the bottom of this journal you will find a full list of all the excisting css selectors. But before you start putting in stuff I want to tell you a bit about the syntax of css so that when you ask me or is asked a question about css we might all communicate better - cool 'nuff right?
In css there are pretty much three different things that controls everything. The selector, the property and the value.
The selector is the element or tag you wish to make changes to.
The property is the type of appearance you want to change.
The value is in direct relation to the property, so it could be a measure or a color or something else.
Here is how you would write them:
.selector {property: value;}
as an example:
.gr-genericbox {background-color:white;}
A selector can have multiple properties - and some properties can be put together to save space so you could write:
.gr-genericbox {
background-color:white;
background-image: url(image.png);
background-repeat: no-re
